The Problem

Your House Is Working Against You

Heat rises. Without proper loft insulation, it goes straight through the ceiling and out into the cold. If upstairs rooms stay colder than the rest of the house, or your heating runs for hours before the top floor warms up, your loft is the most likely reason.

Building Regs require 270mm minimum. Most South Wales homes built before 2000 have 50mm or less. Your boiler is working far harder than it should to keep upstairs comfortable.
25% of total heat lost through the roof. Cavity walls, solar, new boilers — none of them fix heat escaping straight up through the ceiling.
One of the highest-return upgrades available. Modest supply-and-fit cost, payback in a few heating seasons through lower bills. 0% VAT included.

The roof is highlighted in teal because it is typically the easiest and most cost-effective source of heat loss to fix. Cavity wall insulation addresses walls at the same time. The two measures combined tackle over 60% of the problem.

The Solution

Knauf Loft Roll 44 to 270mm, Cross-Laid

We install Knauf Loft Roll 44, a glass mineral wool with thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/mK. Euroclass A1 non-combustible. Made with ECOSE bio-based binder. BBA certified.

Laid in two cross-laid layers: 100mm between joists, 170mm over the top. This eliminates cold bridges created by the timber joists and gives even 270mm coverage across the whole loft floor.

25%
Of home heat lost through an uninsulated roof
Addressing this single source of heat loss is one of the highest-return energy upgrades available for a South Wales home.
1
Cold loft insulation, the standard approach
Insulation laid at ceiling joist level. Loft space stays cold, warm air below is retained. Works for standard pitched-roof homes throughout South Wales and South West England.
2
Ventilation checked first
Airflow above the insulation prevents condensation. We assess eaves ventilation before installation and recommend improvements (trickle vents, eaves vents) where needed.
3
Existing insulation topped up
If some insulation is already in place and in good condition, we top up to 270mm rather than removing it. If it's contaminated or degraded, we remove and start fresh.
4
Up to 500mm available for maximum efficiency
270mm meets current Building Regs. For homeowners wanting new-build standards, we can install up to 400-500mm in 3 cross-laid layers, achieving U-values as low as 0.08 W/m²K.

The Benefits

What Changes When Your Loft Is Properly Insulated

Up to £395/yr Saved
Energy Saving Trust estimates up to £395 a year saved on heating bills by bringing an uninsulated loft up to 270mm. 0% VAT on insulation means no hidden cost on top of the quoted price.
Warmer Upstairs Rooms
The change customers notice first: warmer bedrooms. Rooms that took hours to heat, or never reached thermostat temperature, warm up and stay warm.
Fast Installation
Typical semi or detached loft is insulated in 2-4 hours. You don't need to leave the house. Loft left clean, tidy and accessible.
Euroclass A1 Non-Combustible
Knauf Loft Roll 44 has the highest possible fire classification (Euroclass A1). Glass mineral wool is the industry-standard for cold loft insulation — safe, proven, and specified in Building Regs.
Lifetime of the Building
Properly-installed glass mineral wool doesn't degrade, settle significantly, or lose thermal performance. Install once, benefit continues for the life of the property.
Works Alongside Other Measures
Pairs well with cavity wall insulation (a further 35% of heat loss addressed). If your survey shows you need both, we handle everything in one project.

Is It Right For You

Almost Every Home in South Wales Qualifies

Loft insulation suits the vast majority of homes. There are some exceptions. Here is an honest picture before you get in touch.

A good fit if...
Your property has a standard pitched or flat roof with accessible loft space. The vast majority of semi-detached and detached homes across South Wales and South West England qualify.
Your current insulation is below 270mm, or absent entirely. Many South Wales homes built before 2000 have 50mm or less, well below the recommended standard.
You want to reduce heating bills and make your upstairs rooms more comfortable without major building work or disruption.
You want honest pricing, a proper survey and workmanship that holds PAS2030 certification from day one.
You also have unfilled cavity walls. Loft insulation and cavity wall insulation together address over 60% of your home's heat loss. Find out more about cavity wall insulation.
May not be the right approach if...
Your loft is a habitable converted room in use as living space. A converted loft requires room-in-roof insulation, which is a different product and process. We install that too, see our room in roof insulation page.
Your loft has significant damp, rot or structural issues that need addressing first. We identify these on survey and advise on next steps before any insulation work begins.
Access is very severely restricted, for example, a very low pitch or blocked hatch. We assess access during the survey and confirm whether installation is feasible before you commit.

Not sure which category applies to you? Book a free survey. We will assess your loft, confirm what is there, and give you a straight answer about the best approach for your property.

Exact price confirmed after free survey based on loft size and access
Includes: free survey, Knauf Loft Roll 44 supply, install to 270mm, PAS2030 paperwork, clean-up and sign-off.
What affects your final price
The main variables are your loft floor area, the current insulation depth and the access available via the hatch. All prices above are indicative ranges, your exact quote is confirmed after the free survey with no obligation to proceed. Finance options including 0% APR are available on qualifying installations. All finance subject to status.
What Affects the Final Price
Loft floor areaLarger lofts require more material and take longer to insulate. We measure the area on survey and price accordingly. Most standard semi-detached properties fall in the lower end of the range.
Current insulation depthIf there is already some insulation in place, we top it up rather than remove it. Properties with zero insulation require slightly more material than those being topped up from 50mm.
Access and boardingIf the loft has extensive boarding over the joists, working around it takes longer. We always confirm access at survey and include any access preparation in the quote before you commit.

FAQ

Questions We Get Asked Every Week

Honest answers to the questions South Wales homeowners ask before booking a loft insulation survey. If yours is not here, call us or request a callback.

How much does loft insulation cost?
Supply and fit for a typical South Wales property is £300-£800 depending on loft area, current insulation depth and access. 0% VAT included. Exact price confirmed at free survey.
What depth of loft insulation do I need?
Current Building Regs require 270mm minimum in England and Wales (350mm in Scotland). We install Knauf Loft Roll 44 to 270mm as standard. For maximum efficiency (U-values as low as 0.08 W/m²K) we can go up to 400-500mm in 3 cross-laid layers. We top up existing insulation where possible rather than removing it.
How long does loft insulation installation take?
Typical semi-detached takes 2-4 hours. Larger properties or extensive loft boarding may take slightly longer. You don't need to leave the house. Loft left clean and accessible.
Can loft insulation cause damp or condensation problems?
When installed correctly with adequate ventilation above the insulation, Knauf Loft Roll 44 does not cause damp. We assess loft ventilation before install — if additional ventilation is needed (eaves vents, trickle vents), we identify it at survey and address it before the insulation goes in.
Will I lose access to my loft for storage?
Not necessarily. Loft boarding can be reinstated after insulation on raised legs that preserve the full 270mm depth. This keeps your loft accessible for storage without compressing the insulation and reducing its thermal performance. Ask about loft boarding as an addition at the time of your survey.
Is loft insulation alone enough, or do I also need cavity wall insulation?
Loft insulation addresses heat loss through the roof, around 25% of your home's total heat loss. Cavity wall insulation addresses heat loss through the walls, which accounts for a further 35%. Combining both measures tackles over 60% of your home's heat loss. If your property has unfilled cavity walls, we strongly recommend addressing both. We install cavity wall insulation throughout South Wales and South West England. Find out more about cavity wall insulation.
What type of insulation material do you use?
We install Knauf Loft Roll 44 — a glass mineral wool with thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/mK. Euroclass A1 non-combustible (the highest possible fire classification). Made with ECOSE Technology bio-based binder, up to 80% recycled glass content. BBA certified. Laid in two cross-direction layers to achieve 270mm and eliminate cold bridging at the joists. Non-hygroscopic, doesn't support vermin, doesn't encourage fungi, mould or bacteria.
