The Problem

When Your Boiler Goes, It Goes at the Worst Time

Boilers rarely break down on a warm summer afternoon. They fail on the coldest morning of the year, leaving you without heating or hot water, scrambling to find an engineer who can come at short notice. If your boiler is over 10 years old, that morning is coming. The question is whether you are prepared when it does.

Older boilers lose efficiency fast. A boiler fitted in 2010 may be operating at 78% or lower. A new A-rated unit runs at 92% or higher. That difference adds up on every gas bill, every month.
Repair bills accumulate. Replacing an igniter here, a pump there, a diverter valve next winter. Each repair buys a little more time from a system that is past its best.
Parts availability dries up. For boilers over 15 years old, manufacturer parts can be discontinued. At that point, repair stops being an option at any price.

Older boilers burn more gas to produce the same heat. The difference between a 15-year-old boiler and a new one can be over 25p in every pound spent on gas. Annual service can slow the decline but cannot reverse it.

The Solution

A New Boiler That Works Properly, From Day One

A like-for-like combi boiler replacement typically takes one day. You keep heating and hot water throughout most of the process, with a brief interruption during changeover. Our Gas Safe registered engineers handle everything: removal and disposal of your old unit, installation and commissioning of the new one, and registration of the manufacturer warranty in your name before we leave.

We install leading brands, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, and Ideal, and will recommend the right unit for your property size, hot water demand and usage pattern at your free survey. No upselling. A recommendation based on what your home actually needs.

92%+
Efficiency on a new A-rated boiler
Compared to 65% or lower on a boiler over 15 years old. The savings on your gas bill begin from the moment the new boiler is commissioned.

The Benefits

What a New Boiler Actually Changes

Lower Gas Bills From Day One
A new A-rated boiler running at 92% efficiency burns measurably less gas for the same heat output as an ageing unit at 70% or below. For an average South Wales home, the annual saving can comfortably run into hundreds of pounds. The boiler pays for itself over time.
Up to 10yr Manufacturer Warranty
Leading brands offer between 5 and 10 years warranty depending on the model selected. The warranty is registered in your name before we leave the property. Annual servicing by a Gas Safe engineer keeps the warranty valid and the boiler running efficiently throughout.
Reliable Heat and Hot Water
A new boiler means no more cold mornings wondering whether today will be the day it gives up. Modern combi boilers deliver hot water on demand, respond quickly to thermostats, and run quietly. Reliability is the most underrated benefit of a replacement.
Smart Controls Compatibility
Modern boilers are compatible with smart thermostats and weather compensation controls. Schedule your heating from your phone, adjust it remotely, and let the system learn your usage patterns. Better control means less gas wasted heating an empty house.
No Repair Bill Surprises
Emergency call-outs, parts, and labour on an old boiler can run to several hundred pounds per visit. A new unit under warranty means that kind of cost becomes the manufacturer's problem, not yours, for the duration of the warranty period.
Property Value and EPC Improvement
A new high-efficiency gas boiler improves your property's Energy Performance Certificate rating. This matters for mortgage purposes, rental compliance, and if you come to sell. An inefficient old boiler is a visible mark against an EPC assessment.

Is It Right For You

When a New Gas Boiler Is the Right Answer

Not everyone needs a replacement right now. Here is an honest breakdown of when it makes sense, and when it might not.

A good fit if...
Your boiler is 10 or more years old and starting to show signs of wear
You have had two or more costly repairs in the last two years
Your boiler is running at low efficiency, driving up your gas bills
Your boiler has broken down and parts are no longer available
You want reliable heating ahead of winter rather than waiting for a failure
Your home is not suitable for a heat pump yet, insufficient insulation, rental property, or you need heating restored quickly
Worth considering alternatives if...
Your boiler is under 7 years old and has only had a minor fault
The repair is straightforward and the cost is clearly justified
Your home is well-insulated and you are planning a heat pump, installing a new gas boiler now could be a short-term cost on a medium-term transition
Your property has no gas connection and you have been quoted for a new supply, the cost of laying a new gas connection can make other options more attractive
Not sure which way to go?
We will give you an honest assessment at your free survey. If a repair is the right choice, we will tell you. If a heat pump is a better long-term investment for your property, we offer those too.

Pricing

Honest Price Ranges

We do not publish fixed prices because the cost of a boiler installation depends on your property, the complexity of the pipework, and the specification required. What we can give you is an honest range and a clear explanation of what drives the price up or down.

Boiler Type
System Boiler
Heats central heating and a separate hot water cylinder. Better suited for larger properties with higher simultaneous hot water demand, or where a combi cannot meet the required output.
Supply and fit, typical range
£2,800, £4,500
Final price confirmed at free survey. Higher range reflects additional cylinder work and pipework where required.
Full supply and fit by Gas Safe registered engineers
Removal and responsible disposal of old boiler
Hot water cylinder work as required
New system controls and thermostat
Commissioning, testing, and handover
Manufacturer warranty registered in your name
Finance available, spread the cost
We offer 0% APR options for shorter terms and up to 120 months at 9.9% APR. No upfront cost options are available subject to status. Finance eligibility is confirmed at point of application. Ask us for details at your free survey.

What Affects the Final Price

Boiler brand and output
Higher-output boilers for larger homes cost more. Premium brands with longer warranties sit at the upper end of the range.
Pipework complexity
Relocating the boiler, replacing old pipework, or upgrading undersize pipework adds to the installation time and therefore the cost.
Controls and smart thermostat
A basic room thermostat is included as standard. Smart thermostats (Hive, Nest, Honeywell) add to the cost but often pay back through reduced consumption.
FAQ

Questions We Hear Every Day

Honest answers to the questions customers ask us before they decide. No sales language.

Still have a question?
Call us on 0808 502 2308 or email enquiries@firstchoiceenergy.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.
How much does a new gas boiler cost installed?
A new combi boiler, supplied and fitted, typically costs between £2,200 and £3,500 for a standard domestic replacement. A system boiler with a hot water cylinder typically costs between £2,800 and £4,500. The final price depends on the boiler brand and output, the complexity of the installation, and any additional work such as pipework upgrades or new controls. We provide a fixed written quote before any work begins.
How long does a boiler replacement take?
A straight combi boiler replacement, like for like, same position, typically takes one day. If the new boiler is in a different location, or if pipework or radiators need attention, it may extend to two days. We give you a clear programme before we start and aim to leave you with heating and hot water restored on the same day.
Which boiler brands do you install?
We install leading brands including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, and Ideal. Each manufacturer offers different warranty terms and product ranges. We will recommend the most suitable option for your property, usage pattern, and budget at your free survey. We do not push a particular brand, we recommend what is right for your home.
My boiler is 10 years old, should I replace it or repair it?
A boiler over 10 years old operating at below 85% efficiency is usually a stronger candidate for replacement than repair. Repair costs on older boilers accumulate quickly, and parts for older models can be difficult to source. A new A-rated boiler at 92% or higher efficiency will also reduce your gas consumption, partially offsetting the installation cost over time. At your free survey we will give you an honest assessment, we will never recommend replacement if repair is the more sensible choice.
What warranty do I get on a new boiler?
Most boilers we install come with a manufacturer warranty of between 5 and 10 years, depending on the brand and model selected. The warranty is registered in your name on the day of installation and is subject to annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We explain the exact terms and servicing requirements at the point of installation.
Do I need to be home during the installation?
Yes, someone over 18 must be present throughout the installation. We will also need access to your gas meter, stopcock, and any existing pipework. We confirm all access requirements with you before the installation date to avoid any delays on the day.
Should I consider a heat pump instead of a new gas boiler?
For some properties, an air source heat pump is a better long-term choice, particularly if your home is well-insulated, you want to reduce your carbon footprint, or you want to qualify for the government's £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. However, if your boiler has failed and you need heat quickly, or your property is not yet suitable for a heat pump, a new gas boiler remains the most practical and cost-effective solution. We install both systems and are completely honest about which is the better fit for your situation. You can read more on our air source heat pump page.
What areas do you cover for gas boiler installation?
We cover South Wales, including Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Pembrokeshire, West Glamorgan, Monmouthshire, and Powys, as well as South West and West England, including Bristol, Bath, Devon, Gloucestershire, Taunton, and Swindon. Gas boiler installation is not available UK-wide. If you are unsure whether we cover your postcode, call us on 0808 502 2308.
