The Problem

Your Walls Are the Biggest Source of Heat Loss in Your Home

Walls account for around 35% of the heat lost from an uninsulated home. More than the roof. More than the floor. If your external walls feel cold, rooms never feel warm enough, or the heating runs constantly, your cavity walls are almost certainly the reason.

Empty cavity means constant heat loss. Most South Wales homes built 1930-1990 have two layers of brick with a gap between. If that gap was never filled, cold air circulates and heat escapes straight through.
New boiler, new windows, loft done — and still no saving? It's often because the walls were never addressed. They're the piece most homes are still missing.
One of the highest-return home improvements. Modest cost, payback in a few heating seasons. Cavity wall insulation is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available.

The Solution

Climabead EPS Fill, Completed in a Single Day

Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between the two layers of your external walls.

We install Climabead — a Kiwa-certified EPS bead system. Small 22mm holes are drilled into your external mortar joints, and the beads and adhesive are injected under controlled pressure.

The holes are then filled and colour-matched to your existing mortar. The adhesive binds the beads so they stay put for the life of the building.

35%
Of home heat lost through uninsulated cavity walls
Addressing walls alone makes more difference than any other single insulation measure available to most South Wales homes.
1
Suitable for properties built 1920 onwards
Cavity construction was standard across South Wales from the 1920s. Older solid-wall properties need internal wall insulation instead. Our survey confirms construction type before any quote.
2
Cavity condition assessed first
We check cavity width, existing fill, damp and pointing condition. Our ABBE-qualified surveyors only proceed when the property is suitable.
3
Climabead, Kiwa-certified to BAW 18-043
Closed-cell EPS beads (2-9mm) bonded with acrylic adhesive. Water resistant, does not allow water to cross the cavity, structurally stable for the life of the building. All work to PAS2030 standard.

The Benefits

What Changes When Your Walls Are Properly Insulated

Lower Heating Bills
With 35% of heat loss addressed, your boiler works less to hold the same temperature. Typical 3-bed South Wales semi saves around £175–£200 a year.
Warmer Rooms on Outer Walls
Exterior walls feel warmer to the touch. Rooms against gable walls that never felt properly warm become genuinely comfortable, noticeable from the first heating season.
Completed in a Single Day
Most South Wales semis and terraces are finished in a single working day. Work is external, no disruption inside, no need to move furniture.
Appearance Unchanged
Drill holes are filled and colour-matched to existing mortar. Virtually undetectable once finished. No change to wall thickness, no planning implications.
Works Alongside Other Measures
Walls and roof together account for 60% of a home's heat loss. If your survey shows you need loft insulation too, we handle both in the same project.

Is It Right For You

Is Your Property Suitable for Cavity Wall Insulation?

Cavity wall insulation suits a large proportion of South Wales homes, but not every property qualifies. Here is an honest picture before you get in touch.

A good fit if...
Your home was built between 1920 and 1990. This covers most semis, terraces and detached homes across Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Cardiff and Newport.
Your cavity has not been filled before. Your EPC report usually shows this, we confirm it at survey.
External walls are in good condition, no significant damp, no defective pointing.
You want a fast, one-day install from a PAS2030-certified team with a clear written quote.
You also need loft insulation. Combining both at once tackles over 60% of your home's heat loss. More on loft insulation.
May not be the right approach if...
Your home was built before 1920 with solid stone or brick walls. No cavity to fill, you'd need internal wall insulation instead.
Existing damp or defective pointing on external walls. Insulating a damp wall makes damp worse, we won't proceed until it's resolved.
The cavity has already been filled. If old fill has failed, extraction is the first step.
Very exposed coastal location where driven rain is a significant risk. We assess this at survey and advise honestly.

Why Us

Why Homeowners in South Wales Choose First Choice Energy

PAS2030 certification, ABBE-qualified surveyors and a NEBOSH-qualified director aren't standard across the industry. They're what separates a serious insulation company from a contractor who drills holes and drives away.

01
PAS2030 Certified, The Retrofit Quality Standard
PAS2030 is the retrofit quality standard for certified insulation work. Our certification is held through Blueflame. Check PAS2030 before committing to any insulation installer, it's not optional on quality work.

FAQ

Questions We Get Asked Every Week

Honest answers to what South Wales homeowners ask before booking a cavity wall survey. If yours isn't here, call or request a callback.

How much does cavity wall insulation cost?
Typically £400 to £900 supply and fit, depending on property size and access. 0% VAT is included. Exact price confirmed after free survey.
How do I know if my home has cavity walls?
Most UK homes built between 1920 and 1990 have cavity walls. Measure the external wall at a window reveal, 250-300mm thick usually means a cavity. Your EPC report will also show it, and we confirm definitively at survey.
How long does the installation take?
Most semis and terraces are done in a single day. Larger detached properties may take slightly longer. Work is external, you can stay in the house throughout.
Can cavity wall insulation cause damp?
Not when correctly specified and installed in a suitable property. Historic damp problems trace back to poor pre-install assessment, properties with existing damp, defective pointing or exposed coastal positions. Our ABBE-qualified surveyors check for all of these before we recommend the work.
My house was built before 1920. Can I still have insulation installed?
Pre-1920 properties usually have solid walls with no cavity. You'd need internal wall insulation instead, which we also install.
What if the insulation ever needs to be removed?
Correctly installed fill in a suitable property rarely needs removal. If old fill has failed or major works are planned, we offer cavity wall extraction as a separate service.
Should I get cavity wall and loft insulation at the same time?
If you need both, yes. Walls account for 35% of heat loss, the roof another 25%. Tackling both in one project maximises the bill reduction. See our loft insulation page.
Will the drill holes be visible afterwards?
Holes are about 22mm across. They're filled with mortar mix and colour-matched to your existing pointing. Within a few weeks they're virtually undetectable.
What material do you use for cavity wall insulation?
We install Climabead — Kiwa BDA Agrément certified EPS beads (2-9mm, 12kg/m³ density) bonded with an acrylic adhesive. Water resistant, does not allow water to cross the cavity, structurally stable for the life of the building. Certificate BAW 18-043-S-A-UK.
