How Are Free Non Repayable Boiler Grants Available in Wales?

As of the 27th of June, 2019, the UK Government became the first major economy to set a target that will end its contribution to global warming by 2050. A key factor in reaching this goal is the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). A scheme introduced by the government to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty.

Nobody wants to struggle with the cost of heating their homes, but sadly this is the case for many families in Wales.

However, the ECO government scheme is designed to help those in low income, fuel poor and vulnerable households.

Step 1: Qualifying Your Home.

Are you a homeowner?

If you’re a homeowner, you tick the first box of the eligibility criteria. However if you’re a tenant then you would not qualify, neither would the landlord who rents the property to you. So you must be a homeowner living in wales to qualify for a free boiler grant.

How old is your current boiler?

As of when this article was posted, there is only funding available for gas boilers that meet the following criteria:-

  • The boiler has broken.
  • The boiler is 6+ years old.
  • You have not boiler/heating system in place.

Do you have suspended floor?

As the ECO scheme was designed to lower carbon emissions a second measure must be installed with your new gas boiler. To do this your floor must be suspended (I.e, underneath your carpet or wooden floor is floor boards). Homes with solid floors will not qualify for a grant.

Side note: Homes in wales with both solid and suspended floors can still qualify for a free boiler grant.

Step 2: Who Qualifies for a Boiler Grant?

The ECO grant is divided into two separate grants, HHCRO and Flex.

Flex Scheme.

What is Flex? Flexibility allows certain residents in addition to those clamming state benefits to qualify for the energy company obligation scheme. The scheme provides funding towards heating installs and home insulation to households in fuel poverty. Local councils can qualify residents on their individual circumstances which includes income, age and health. For example, pensioners can qualify for a funding.

HHCRO Scheme.

What is HHCRO? HHCRO is the name of the funding scheme given to those who claim benefits. To be eligible for HHCRO funding, you must be in receipt of one of the following benefits;-

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Benefit
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Mobility Supplement
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Tax Credits (Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits)
  • Universal Credit

Step 3: How to Apply for a Free Boiler Grant in Wales?

To begin your application process you need to contact an ECO certified installer. This can be done by a simple google search, however I would strongly suggest that you avoid this method.

Alternatively, you can search for an ECO installer on Trustmark and book a consultation with a specialist. TrustMark is the government endorsed quality scheme covering all aspects of consumer work that is carried out in their homes. You can also take our free boiler grant eligibility survey. We are Trustmark approved and hold all the relevant certifications. All certificates can be found here.

A properly designed hydronic systems provides clean and efficient energy. Bearing in mind the Combination Boiler you choose must be energy efficient, we have suggest the following UK boiler manufactures and models:

Vaillant EcoTec Plus 831 Combi Boiler.

The ecoTEC plus combines fantastic efficiency levels and high performance with great usability. Moreover, this combination boiler provides almost instant hot water delivery to your taps and fits simply and easily into homes.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar 28i junior.

Despite the Worcester Bosch being a household name, this particular model has many key features that make it the ideal choice for any small to medium size properties. In addition to this, the 28I combination boiler is fully compatible with some of Worcester’s heating controls.

Ideal logic 24 Gas Fired Condensing boiler.

Ideal are market leaders when it comes to designing boilers. The backlit display allows users to identify fault codes, pressures and even has a built-in boiler service reminder. In addition to this, Ideal have incorporated frost protection into all their logic boiler.

Step 5: Pre Tech Survey and Install

Providing you qualify, a surveyor will come out and survey your home. This will include things like measuring your floor space, checking the thermostats on your radiators, identifying the brand and model of your current gas boiler and asking some general questions regarding your property. A survey generally takes no longer than an hour.

Then it’s time to install a new boiler. Your previous boiler will be replaced with a new gas fired condensing boiler by a gas safe engineer. The floor insulation will be fitted by a carpenter. Although the process sounds messy and time consuming, on average it takes no longer than a day. And of course, the cost to install the boiler and install the floor insulation is covered by the grant.
